First Grade

This is the room where I spend upwards of 1/3 of my day. For several weeks, it looked pretty bare, but I am really starting to clutter it up now.

This week we are having a fabulous time studying owls in science and writing a class story in Writer's Workshop. Brace yourselves for the upcoming story of The Ice Cream Man, based on the classic tale of The Gingerbread Man and the not-quite-as-classic tale of The Stinky Cheese Man. The great thing about both of these stories is the moral lesson they teach. Do not trust a sly fox. Ever.

I, too, have learned many lessons during my now 4.5 weeks in first grade. First, the Clean Desk Fairy is the best friend a teacher can have. Second, days go by really fast when you have a plan. And last, but definitely not least, teaching requires a bag full of tricks and a cabinet full of supplies. Here's a peek into my supply cabinet:

First of all, HOW did you do the picture like that?

Also, a little bit of owl trivia to share with your students, if you haven't already: owls are the ONLY natural predators of skunks, because owls have no sense of smell.

Yes, planning is good in teaching. My favorite used to be when we got too busy to do everything I had planned, and then I could stash it away for the next week!

Becky, it is the Picture Grid option under collages on Picasa (instead of Picture Pile). Thanks for the owl trivia...I'll use it!

The Hooters...hahaha!!! Yeah, not sure the administration would look approvingly on that.

Wow! Your room looks great. I second the clean desk fairy -- I'm so glad you created her. The first week three kids got sparkly pencils. We're up to about 15! Woohoo! And did my eyes deceive me, or are you actually studying a BIRD and thinking baby CHICKS are cute? Hmmmm....my love for birds must have rubbed off a LITTLE.

Becks, I am a nerd, too! Count me in.

Ha, Shan, I didn't even think about all the birds!!! Good thing we are still Bird Flu free as of today :)

Mandi, I will have to check on Owls in the Family-thanks! So far, I haven't had any trouble with the sanitizer. Except when I have a paper cut...ouch!!!

And you have to use lotion to prevent paper cuts. All the worksheets and papers you handle each day draw the oils from your hands, making them dry and susceptible to cuts. The lotion will rememdy that. But the germ-x is drying too, so use lotion after that as well.

See? I'M A NERD.

Your room looks great!! Reminds me of my old days in the system. I'm glad to be home after 10 days in
L A, although I did have a great time. Hope to catch up with you later.
Love you.

Bare? You call that bare? Girl I think it looks great and you should see my office with no windows and NOTHING on the walls. Then you can say bare. Can I borrow some Germ-X? Today we got a special spray that kills all kinds of germs that was approved by the county..can't wait to start spraying when kids start coughing, sharing snot, breathing in my direction...

Hey next time your mom goes to LA for 10 days can I go with her? HELLO

Hi Bella Sera...thought I should tell you LA is for Lower Alabama.
Mandy's brother lives about 45 minutes from Gulf Shores, so it is still nice, and you don't have to deal with the fruitcakes!!

Thanks for the clarification!!
