I Love Technology

"I still love technology, always and forever"...Kip Dynamite

Last night I came across my old Berry student ID from freshman year. It looks like this:

It was made one afternoon at Freshman Orientation. We stood in line, had our picture made with a big camera, a few minutes later the picture printed, and student workers typed in our name and Student Number on the card, had us sign it, then they ran it through the laminator. That was the process. My sophomore year we upgraded to a more sophisticated ID, so this one was retired, but I love its simplicity.

I also remember the computers in the Evans Hall lab. Couldn't even figure out how to log on to my email for the first two months of fall semester. I don't know what system they ran on, but it sure wasn't an easy Windows log-in screen. And NO WAY did we have internet access in our dorms...no dial-up...no DSL...and wireless was unheard of.

I remember our group of friends making each other mixed tapes for birthday presents, and when our friend Jon got a CD burner, we thought he was the Coolest. Person. EVAH!

Tonight I am typing this from my bed using wireless internet. I just finished installing Skype so I can call (or video chat?) a friend in Africa via my laptop. My music collection is stored on an iPod the size of a pack of gum. To "get ready for work" all I need is the following:
My vocabulary consists of a whole new set of words than it did when that picture was taken back at Freshman Orientation (gulp...11 years ago...) Blog, IM, text message, jump drive, webcam, memory card, USB port. I sound like such a geek. But, it has become the common language of our day. If I want to keep in touch with friends and continue to hold a job in this world, that vocabulary is part of it. At least it does cool stuff, right?

Love it, love it, love it! I too can do my job with just one lil bitty flash drive--beats a briefcase!

I think the Berry computers used Netscape Navigator--the one you never hear about these days....

I'm gonna add you to my skype list, okay?

i love tech, too. I was just saying to my kids how cool it was, cause my new laptop still isn't hooked up to our printer, but I was able to click and drag a file from my laptop into my desktop via our wireless network, and then print the doc from the desktop. All from my recliner. makes me happy.

Wait until you're sitting at dinner and your friends pull out their "notebook" (not paper) and start sharing their pictures with you. THAT's a GEEK. Simply b/c they just "happened" to have their notebook with them b/c they carry it everywhere.
