Sssssssssnake!!!!!

Oh, what fun today has been. The most adorable kid came to mow the lawn today (he would probably gag if he knew I had described him that way, but, really, he was adorable...red hair, freckles...I digress...)

He came to the door, we talked for a few minutes, he went back to his dad's truck to get ready to mow. I went back to my office to work some more.

A few minutes later, I heard another knock at the door. His dad was there and we had the following conversation.

The Dad: Did you know you have a snake sitting right there by your door?
Me: (Looking beside the door) Um, no, I didn't. (Seeing EXTREMELY LARGE snake with HUGE LUMP IN STOMACH) Oh, my! (Jumping 3 feet in air)
The Dad: Would you like for me to try to move it to the bushes or something?
Me: Uh, yeah. Would ya?
The Dad: Mmkay. Do you have...something...I could use? Like a shovel?
Me: (Backing slowly into house) I'll be right back.

Then my phone rang with my boss for a conference call. Of course. Because timing is everything. I am now trying to discuss business as usual, get a shovel, and watch the dad get rid of the snake. The dad succeeds only in scaring the snake under some wood by the front door. And there the snake sat. Just lurking by the front door. Great.

My friend Lindsey called about an hour later about carpooling to our friend Jen's. I explained that she might want to stay away from my front door because of the snake situation. She happened to mention that little tidbit of info to her husband, Mark. Mark then decided to come over and catch the snake! Lindsey and I left, but Mark succeeded in removing the snake. He teaches high school science so he is pretty psyched about having a little show and tell tomorrow.

Oh, and the lump? If you have a weak stomach, you might want to stop reading here.

The snake has had a pretty rough day, and is a bit agitated. Mark called Lindsey to tell us that it threw up the lump (did you know snakes could vomit?) The good news is I didn't have any mice around as I had originally thought. The bad news is I no longer have 4 baby birds around, either.

Wow...I'm really impressed you said that was bad news! ;) Becky and Katie...if you think the story was funny, you should have seen Mandy acting it out! I'd have paid $7.75 to watch it!

I am terrified of snakes, so this story gave me the heebie-geebies! I can't even look at a cartoon Thanks to my mom passing down her extreme fears to me! One of many!

Snakes are much better than cockroaches. Thanks to MY mom for passing down HER fears to me! ;)

I believe the scientific name of the snake is reptilius giganticus. But it is more commonly known as a corn snake :)

Oh, you should have called Scott. He tried to buy a corn snake a few weeks ago, but it's illegal to sell/buy them in Ga. And by the way, that was me that asked. Just didn't get the 'a' in there. That's what comes from trying to type while holding a three year old who was trying to bite my ear while sitting on a yoga ball.
Who says my life is dull?

Corn snakes are not poisonous. Interestingly enough, you could have a poisonous snake in captivity if you wanted one (from what I read on Scott's blog!)

Willa, there is NO WAY you can claim your life is dull :)

Oh, and Jessica, I couldn't even sleep last night I had the heebie-geebies so bad! If I had seen it in an aquarium or something, it would have been fine, but I don't like surprise sightings.

Link to GA DNR Site

"By Georgia Law, most native species of wildlife cannot be held without permits or licenses. These licenses are not issued for the purpose of holding native wildlife as pets. These restrictions apply to the various species of animal, regardless of the origin or morphology."

Copperheads and rattlesnakes are also not on the ban list, either because they qualify as a "nuisance" or so people can have snake roundups and poisonous snakes at church services (or at least that's the only valid reason I've heard yet on why they aren't similarly protected). :-)

As far as I know, Georgia is the only state that has these types of restrictions on snakes.
