I'm Not Buying

January 31, 2006
Either television has become good lately, or my standards have been lowered. Another discussion for another time. The point here is that I have been watching quite a lot of TV (too much, really) and have, therefore, seen quite a few advertisements. Has there been some sort of ban on funny commercials of which I am unaware?

Most advertisements I see these days try to make me 1) cry, as part of an inspirational story that will lead me to run out and purchase a product, 2) yell at me, in an attempt to entice me to run out and buy a new or "previously owned" automobile, or 3) annoy me so I will buy their stuff to shut them up.

So, unless a product is necessary for my survival, my acceptance in society, or my general happiness and well being, advertisers take note. If your commercial does not make me laugh or make me happy, I'm not buying.

Last night's tally

Products I'm not buying: Direct Auto Insurance, KFC, various pharmacuticals unless demanded by physician, BellSouth DSL

Products I will buy: Glade Plug-Ins (Possibly. I'm still on the fence about that one.), M&Ms (Good music.)
